Birthed from Thunder

adapted from A Tasty Fungus, Stirring Dreams and Lawsuits

Dozens of canaries chirp
in his sprawling yard
A hand carved mermaid
rises from the brush like a wood nymph

He cultivates you, Perigord, Black Diamonds
musky deep nuggets
earthy morsels of cedar smoke
Rind midnight black
Pulp the purple of twilight
Pungent like fingers in spring soil
Hiding at the bottom of oaks, poplars and willows

Plutarch believed you the result of lightening, water, and light
Juvenal thought you were birthed from thunder
Cicero called you “Children of the Earth”
Muslims thought  you “manna”
The Christian church called you “devilish”
French peasants savored you secretly

Humble lump of earth
$2,700 per pound
