inspired by Rent-A-Friend story on NPR
My tongue has grown monstrous in my mouth
Throat parched, breathing shallow
Facing another person
Steals my peace, but rids me of the burdens of speechlessness
What will I say when he has finished?
What if silence swims from my mouth like silver minnows?
Everyone will see my apologetic posture
my shabby smile, teeth chipped and falling out, as in a nightmare
Must I look him in the eye?
Could I look just beyond?
Must I ask and answer questions like a court proceeding?
For $65, he pretends not to notice my stammering voice
my shaking hands
my indifferent eyes
